The Woodfin Parks and Recreation Department is charged with providing appropriate and safe facilities and programs to enhance the quality of life of our citizens. The Town of Woodfin is home to a wide variety of recreational opportunities. We hope you will take advantage of our wonderful parks and treat them with the respect that they -and your fellow citizens- deserve.

Our facilities include:

The Roy Pope Memorial Park which is located at 90 Elk Mountain Road. This park plays host to "Avery's Corner" a memorial playground dedicated to Avery King. The facility includes twin play castles, swings, a large sand box, slides, interactive games, as well as a toddler play area. Additional features at this park include: a large climbing web for older children, bathroom facilities, and picnic facilities. Parking and entrance to the park are free. Over the next several months additional features and improvements will be installed. Please stop by frequently with your family to take advantage of this beautiful park.

The Woodfin Riverside Park which is located at 1450 Riverside Drive in the vicinity of Craggy Bridge. This park features over a mile of walking trails along the scenic French Broad River. The park features covered and uncovered picnic facilities, bathrooms, a gazebo, and a kayak launch. The park allows visitors to escape the pressure of the day and unwind along a lazy riverbank in the shade of an ancient tree. Visitors can also see the remains of the old Craggy Railroad Bridge where Union soldiers crossed the French Broad River in April of 1865 to fight the "Battle of Asheville." Stroll along our meandering -but well paved- pathways or bring your family for a cookout, but make sure to bring your Frisbee or Football because there are no play structures at this facility.

South Woodfin Park which is located at the intersection of Lookout Road and Midwood Drive. This pocket park is home to one of Woodfin's famous climbing dragons as well as a host of play equipment for young children and tweens. Older children can look forward to the summer and fall of 2008 when the Town expects to open the Woodfin Skate Park on a portion of this site. More details will be added soon.

The Woodfin Community Center is located on Community Drive. It consists of a basketball court, a baseball field, and the Community Center building. The Community Center is available for rent for your next event. It is able to host large or small events and holds a large stage with sound equipment available. In addition, the Community Center holds a large kitchen and several tables and chairs…in short everything you need for a wedding reception except the food. If you are interested in renting the Community Center building please contact Town Hall at 828.253.4887.

The Parks and Recreation Department also hosts a number of events during the year including:

Labor Day Picnic
An old fashioned Town Barbeque where the food, fun and games are all free and where you and your family can truly enjoy a break from your labors.

Blue Grass Saturday Nights
A free bluegrass music concert twice a month at the Community Center.

Woodfin Christmas Festival
A seasonal visit from Santa featuring games, music, toys and more.

The Woodfin Parks and Recreation Department is committed to continually improving our services. If you think there is something else that we should be doing or if you want to find out more about upcoming events call the Town Hall today.

Registered Sex Offenders Are Prohibited From Entering Any Park or Recreational Facility of the Town of Woodfin.

The Woodfin Parks and Recreation Department is charged with providing appropriate and safe facilities and programs to enhance the quality of life of our citizens. Part of that mission means enhancing the safety of our facilities through appropriate and reasoned measures.

In order to enhance safety in our park and recreational facilities the Town of Woodfin passed the nation's first ban on Registered Sex Offenders entering our park and recreational facilities in April of 2005. Over the last few years the Town has successfully defended this ordinance from legal challenge -most recently prevailing before the North Carolina Supreme Court in Standley v. Town of Woodfin.

While this ordinance is not a complete solution to the issue of public safety, we believe that it is an important tool towards the goal of providing safe parks for the peaceable enjoyment of our citizens and visitors. If you would like to find out more about this ordinance or inquire about getting similar laws passed in your community please contact the Town Administrator.
